Where or how does one find out about a good place to dig? I live in Sterling, and am interested in possibly looking somewhere close to home (NV area).

Ah, good places to dig are hard to come other than via perseverence and, occasionally, luck. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and in order to do that you gotta (1) keep your eyes peeled for construction sites, old houses, and other physical clues to potential dig sites and (2) talk up your interest in bottles with everyone you meet as this will absolutely, positively lead to potential digging sites. Now whether these sites are any good is another topic but ... bottom line is that you have to dig, and dig a lot before you will get into a really good place to dig. Hope that helps.

I do keep my eyes peeled for construction sites, but how does one get permission to hunt for bottles at a construction site? Do you contact the land owner? Or do you talk to the construction foreman?

The first one to say yes... ;o)

A lot of times the foreman will be willing to give a go-ahead, but sometimes they'll re-direct you to the owner or someone else higher on the food chain. The bottom line is if you can establish a rapport with the foreman and he says yes, that's all you need...

I have a lead I am willing to share. There is an old house near Culpepper that is for sale. it's a 19th century house, long empty, and the land is marked for sale and appears to have been surveyed. I collect old beer cans and walked the property a couple weeks ago but didn't find much old enough to bother. (only some late-50s, early 60s trash along the tree line) There did appear to be a depression well behind the house though, that looked like it might be an outhouse site. If anybody wants to try and dig the old outhouse pit, email me and I'll tell you where the house is located.

the property is not marked "no trespassing"but I do not know who owns it, FYI.

Also, it might be a nice site to try to metal-detect for old coins...

Thanks for posting. Long time no talk ... I have not forgotten about you but did lose your email address. As promised long ago (but not delivered upon), I did track down coordinates to that good rusty beer can dump (altho too many Bohemian's) in Charles County, MD. So now that you posted, I will send you directions (to mark at rustycans.com?) since it appears my ability to venture there in the near future is limited. Please let us know how you do.

And last but not least, your website (www.rustycans.com) is a joy to take a gander at even for us lowly bottle collectors.

I second the kudos on Mark's website... lots of great info and even some porcelain Hutter stoppers for the aforementioned lowly bottle collectors, heehee. Hope to see everybody at the meeting tonight!

Andy: thanks, I will check out that site as soon as I can. When is the last time you were there? A couple of weeks ago I went back to a dump I had visited before and found a new house sitting on it! Another dump nearby had been plowed under only a few days before. Fortunately I think both were about dug out but still...

Al: just let me know when. Hopefully the old house hasn't been torn down in the past two weeks!

Mark,

"Save it before they pave it!"... that oughta be the motto around here (or pretty much anywhere). Like I said via email, if I can get all the "honey-dos" knocked out, perhaps my "points balance" will creep back into positive territory, allowing for a strong negotiating position from which to beg for digging time.

In other words, "if my wife lets me..." ;o)

My confidence is pretty high that the Natty Bo dump has not been destroyed because it is a pretty rural area, right off a steep abandoned road slope, and not a great site for a house. With that said, I have not been there in a couple of years ... sorry.
