I found a large clear glass shard with embossed writing on it. Anybody recognize the bottle? it reads..

FANCY GRO[CERY?]
NEXT TO CITY
FREDERICK

Thanks,

Mark

Besant & Knott used the "Fancy Grocery" wording. This was typically a liquer bottle indication. Send me a photo of it. mknapp@antiquemedcines.com

Mark,
Can you take a better pic of the shard? If we can make out the top line we can determine if it's Besant and Knott.
Glad you saved the shard.

It might be Ramsburg also. I cant reallly see that embossing in the photo too well. maybe you could stick it under a scanner?
I dont remember that "NEXT TO THE CITY.." on any Frederick bottles. Looks like a whiskey though.

Maybe I'm stating something obvious, but isn't it likely that "NEXT TO CITY" was "NEXT TO CITY HALL"? How else would that sentence of ended?
Does anybody know if Besant & Knott's grocery store address was next to City Hall?

Mike,

I think that is a heckuva theory, since the positioning of the "NEXT TO CITY" part is offset to the left, and the line above obviously extends quite a way to the right (regardless of whether it is "GROCERY" or "GROCERIES").

So if the whole thing is centered, there should be another word in that "NEXT TO CITY" line...

OK, that means whatever word or words come after "NEXT TO CITY" must add up to about 7 to 10 letters.
NEXT TO CITY...
...LIBRARY?
...COURTHOUSE?
...PLAYGROUND?
I guess it could be a lot of things.
